Everyone has seen smiley faces in chat, and you probably already know how to make the most common ones appear in your Facebook status. However, there are many special smileys and emoticons symbols that you can use in your Facebook updates and display name that you might not even be aware of!

Here are a few smileys for you to try out on Facebook chat. Some of them are common, while others are a bit more unusual. These emoticons are all standard ASCII characters that you can display by using an Alt code to type them into your status update if you know the code. Of course it is much easier to just copy and paste them from this article.

If you haven’t seen this one yet, you have been hiding under a rock. This is the basic happy smiley face that you see all over the place. You can insert this symbol into your name or status update by copying and pasting it from above. The use of this smiley is not limited to Facebook either. You can use it in your word processor or anywhere else that you can type.

Facebook Sad Face

The sad face symbol is smaller than the happy face. You can use it for sad status updates such as when you break up with your boyfriend or fail to pass a test. Whatever the reason that you are unhappy, you can express your unhappiness by adding this symbol to your status message.

Here’s a smiley for anyone who wants to be a little different. You can paste this into your updates whenever you’re feeling happy about something and make your updates stand out. You’re sure to get a lot of people asking how you did it.

Crazy Facebook Smiley

You don’t see this one very often. Here is a lopsided smile to use in your updates when you are in a crazy or silly mood. Your friends will think you’ve flipped for sure when you use this smiley in your updates.

Another Crazy Smiley

This one is similar to the ‘confused’ smiley that you see often, but it is not quite the same. It is also a special ASCII character. You can paste it into your updates to tell your friends how crazy you think they are.

Shocked Facebook Smiley

Well, this is not a real smiley. It is just a special language character, an ‘O’ that has two dots on top. It is something that is used in other languages, so there has to be a way to display it on the computer. It makes a nice shocked face though, so it’s a good one to use in your status message when you are really surprised.

Facebook Big Smile Character

Here is another special language character. This one is a ‘U’ that has two dots on top. Although we don’t use this character in English, we can certainly use it to show how happy we are when something good happens. Reserve this smiley face for the happiest updates to your Facebook status. Sometimes cell phones allow you to use this character too.
